Taylor has marked the pastel tones of the impressionist palette firmly with an almost magical sense of space, timing and colour. Simple chords imply greater things, well-tempered lines resolve obliquely and there is a constant, slightly elliptic underground pulse. Financial Times , 19 April 2009 * * * Taylor is in a reflective mood on a full set of originals that explore space, harmonic construction and thematic development. Financial Times , 14/15 February 2009 * * * This solo piano outing (with overdubbed celesta on two tracks) is another subtle, jewel-like demonstration of <John Taylor's> artistry. All of the tunes are his own, other than an elegant take on Kenny Wheeler's Fedora. The impressionistic single-word titles reflect his ability to evoke moods and pictures in vivid fashion, while his sophisticated melodic and harmonic vocabulary is always evident. The Scotman , 13 February 2009 * * * Other pianists may receive more press, but there are few who can approach Taylor's selfless yet unmistakable style. Whirlpool is another stellar release and, with another recording already in the can, it's good to know there's more to come from a trio that never sacrifices substance for style, and for whom sophistication and accessibility are uniquely linked. John Kelman, All About Jazz, 7 January 2008 * * * ... This is one of contemporary jazz's great performers at work on his own, a beautifully-recorded album capturing an unaccompanied performance that any of the biggest international piano names in the music would be proud of... John Fordham , The Guardian, 2003 * * * …Taylor played as if the piano
were his orchestra, always intriguing and filled with sumptuous chords,
groove-alerting cross-rhythms and nimble lines. His playing is strikingly
original and immediate, as if the piano has revealed all kinds of secrets
